Many of the TV shows I grew up
watching (Full House, Boy Meets World, Fresh Prince of Bellaire) had a moral or
lesson taught in them. The episodes would play out a story where the audience
could connect with the characters and kind of ‘learn’ from their mistakes. They
were more family friendly and appropriate for everybody. However, these days TV
show’s jokes in sitcoms center around sex and makes it inappropriate to watch
around children (even on Nickelodeon and Disney).
It is interesting to see how the new generation’s
TV shows have changed and it makes me wonder why. The old shows dealt with the
same issues as the new TV shows but they just were not shown as explicitly or
as openly. I have a younger sister and my parents are always worried about what
she is watching, because children are easily influenced. There are issues that can be understood at certain ages and I
do not think having children exposed to certain issues at an earlier age will
allow them to full comprehend the meaning. Sure it does no harm for them to get
exposed to it, but they probably will not know what is right or wrong without
because they are not mature enough to make that judgment yet.
I completely agree with you. TV shows have become far too inappropriate these days. The content allowed on "family friendly" shows has become anything but family friendly. Even commercials often times are far too inappropriate for my liking. I hardly watch TV, but when I do it's most likely going to be a sporting event so you can't really go wrong there except when the commercials come on. This year when my friends and I were watching the Superbowl, we even decided to turn the TV off because we knew the commercials were going to be inappropriate even though they are supposed to be the funniest commercials of the year.
ReplyDeleteTelevision shows are decreasing in quality and overall becoming uglier. I am shocked at the loss in quality for many television stations I watched growing up. The topics discussed in the episodes have little value or life lessons, the characters are loud and practically yell at one another the entire show, and the characters' actions are completely nonsensical. I completely agree the topics discussed and jokes made are inappropriate and the younger generations should not be exposed to the mature nature of the subject.
ReplyDeleteI am often shocked at the explicit nature of most television shows. I feel like it is impossible to find a movie these days that doesn't have an explicit scene in it. It makes it very difficult to find shows that I am comfortable watching with my parents and younger brother.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I also have younger siblings and when sitting with them watching tv, I can not believe the things they watch. I believe if these shows were out a couple years ago they would have been extremely inappropriate but some how now they are accepted.
ReplyDeleteThe media has certainly been ambitious in their ability to impact what we believe to be "normal". I've been really dissapointed in the direction television shows have headed as well. Fortunately, there are always Seinfeld re-runs!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree on how TV shows and music and video games even have become more inappropriate, and as a result these kids are growing up a lot faster because they are exposed to a greater reality.
